Abstract

The slope classification and mapping of South African forestry areas was undertaken with the specific objective of minimising terrain/machine mismatches which lead to the deterioration of productivity in the long term. The total forest area, including the indigenous forests, was classified according to preselected slope categories, based on international standards. The results indicate that a swing towards more specialised systems, suited to steep terrain harvesting, is required within the forest industry.
