Abstract

In South African Forestry the planting of poplar trees for matchwood is a niche industry for a niche market. However, clouds are appearing over the horizon, in the form of a reduction in area being managed for this purpose and, lately, in a reduction in volume produced. Reasons for the apparent decline are investigated, while proposals are offered to maintain, for the nation's benefit, a minimum area of poplar groves under responsible conservation management.
