Conservation Developments in South African Forestry

Abstract

The historical development of environmental conservational activities within the South African Forestry Industry is followed, and the changing emphasis from the conservation of the remaining indigenous forests (pre-1900) to water conservation, to natural assets and unplanted areas is highlighted. The modern trend of greater Industry cooperation in environmental management is identified with approval, and the embracing of ISO 14000 as an EMS by some companies and initiation of FSC certification is noted. The effect of forestry on biodiversity is debated, and recommendations are proposed for future environmental management development within the South African Forestry Industry.
