Abstract

The redundancy principle in Northern Sotho implies that any tautological linguistic element must be reduced through omission (elision). This principle is discussed with special reference to relative constructions (verbal, nominal and adjectival constructions). Linguistic elements that become redundant in these types of constructions are the subject concord, class prefix and the relative marker (‘demonstrative’).
