Abstract

This paper considers the links between the study of linguistics and the field of African languages research. It is argued that the context of the southern African university, including socio-political realities, dictate a greater co-operation between the disciplines. A curriculum for university education in linguistics is proposed which is academically sound, loyal to the discipline, and relevant to the operating context of the university.
