Silviculture and Yield

Abstract

Silvicultural factors affecting yield are briefly examined. It is concluded that while many aspects are significantly improving growth and yield, others are depressing them. Positive aspects are tree breeding, site preparation, fertiliser use, weed control, better silviculture and more enlightened management. Negative aspects include pests and diseases, invasive weeds, many aspects of harvesting, a reduction in the genetic base of the plantations and static ineffective management.
