Abstract

The spectral mapping theorem is used to establish the approximation method for functions of normal operators in Hilbert spaces. The application of the method for approximating an inverse leads to an iterative procedure similar to the Chebyshev iterative technique in linear algebra. A numerical example is given to illustrate the method.
