Abstract

The fishery for Limnothrissa on Lake Kariba, which produced nearly 25 000 t in 1985, is backed by a comprehensive statistical system which increases the chance of using catch and effort models to manage it. The way in which effort is calculated on the Zimbabwean side of the lake now seems needlessly complex and unrealistic when compared to the simpler one used on the Zambian side. It is proposed that the Zimbabwean system should be dropped and effort should be estimated in the same way throughout the fishery. Revised values of catch, effort and catch per unit (CPUE) for the period 1974–1985 are given.
