Abstract

The present paper, which discusses the regeneration of Pinus radiata, represents Part 1 of a series of publications based on experimental studies of the subject. It provides information about the background of the trials and discusses the modification of soil physical properties under the influence of soil preparation (pitting, augering, ripping and total soil cultivation) and weed control operations. The experiments were established as a split-split-plot trial, with soil preparation being tested on main plots and weed control on subplots within the main plots. The subplots were subdivided in order to test the effect of seedling grade (low-grade versus high-grade).
