Abstract

Pine seedlings were sequentially planted on small observation plots used to monitor the potential for Rhizina root disease at one recently burned plantation in the Transvaal. The results indicated that seedlings could be planted without delay on sites that were grassveld or seedling pine stands at the time of the fire. A four to six-month delay was necessary at sites that had been 10-year-old pine stands. By using small observation plots, growers may be able to assess disease hazard should fires occur in their forests.
