Abstract

The distribution of the catchment areas on State forest land and the total areas that have been identified as mountain catchment in the Republic of South Africa are indicated. The mean annual run-off from these catchment areas and the 45 larger dams which receive their water totally or partially from them are indicated. The quality of the water obtained from areas managed primarily for water production is discussed. Mention is made of the conservation value of the State forests with reference to the various mammal, bird and fish species that occur there and that have been recorded in the Red Data Books.
