Abstract

Generally phonologists take speech style and speech rate to be synonymous. The research hypothesis of the present study is that the rule application probability (RAP) is directly linked to the rate in which speech is produced, be it read speech or spontaneous speech. The phonological processes under investigation concerned consonant deletion and vowel reduction. We expected the RAP to escalate as rate of speech increases, irrespective of the mode in which the speech was produced.
