Abstract

From a survey of zooplankton samples from 73 South African impoundments, 16 species of rotifers of the family Brachionidae were identified. Of these eight were of the genus Braohionus and four of the genus Keratella. The most frequently encountered brachionid rotifers were Keratella tropica (found in 35 of the 73 impoundments), Brachionus calyciflorus (24 impoundments) and Brachionus falcatus (21 impoundments). All the species encountered are illustrated.
