Abstract

The Xhosa oral poetry tradition as it exists in Southern Africa, has been documented fairly extensively. The tradition is, however, adapting to new circumstances and conditions and appears to be flexible enough to survive. The ‘old style’ poets have been replaced by a younger generation of iimbongi who are in big demand to perform at various occasions.
