Abstract

The praise poetry of Prince James Senzangakhona is discussed against the background of the contemporary nature of praise poetry in general and Ndebele history in particular. These izibongo arose from particular historical events in South Africa in the 1980s. Since the prince fought against independence for KwaNdebele his poetry is full of motifs pertaining to strife and suffering. A few poetic techniques are also highlighted. The conclusion is reached that the ‘traditional’ imbongi still has a role to play.
