Abstract

This article deals with a speech event among Teke youngsters. The participants meet in the evening and play a game that entails a decision to refrain from speaking. Whoever breaks the silence becomes the target of unpleasant jokes in the form of narrated events. This occasion, which constitutes an opportunity for participants to display their linguistic skills, falls within the general framework of verbal art in Teke.
