With this article it is aimed to expound the nature and basic characteristics of radio drama with a critical view at three broadcasts by Radio Sesotho. For this purpose, available sources by scholars of this sub-genre at home and abroad have been consulted. In addition both cassette recording and scripts of the three radio dramas, cordially provided by the SABC, were used. The findings are based firstly on the recordings. The scripts were useful in confirming and reinforcing audible perceptions and imagination, and also to acquaint one with the nature of script-writing. The article starts with a short history of the radio drama, and then discusses its common characteristics. The three selected dramas are then assessed in view of the basic tenets which came to light through the study of general sources.
