Abstract

Maskandi poetry is a type of self-praise which the musician recites while playing a musical instrument. The main purpose of the recitation is to introduce the performer. The poet uses features such as repetition, linking, parallelism and imagery. Peculiar formulas are employed which make it a distinctive art form. Over the years maskandi performance has undergone changes, but the format of izibongo is minimally affected.
