Abstract

Harold Scheub's analysis of the folk-tale reveals that the action of the tale remains constant, but the dynamic creativity of the narrator is emphasized. His structural analysis is, therefore, not only based on the text, but also on the context in which the tale is told. In this article I apply this theory to the Northern-Sotho nonwane. In this theory the nonwane is approached not as a recorded text but as a performance, a production, and the social value of the tale is therefore taken into consideration.
