Abstract

The abbreviated absolute pronouns in Zulu are formatives which are apparently derived from absolute pronouns through the omission of the so-called stabilizing -na, for example -bo > bona, -lo > lona, etc. The function of these derived forms thus far has largely been ignored by Zulu grammarians, presumably because it was considered to be the same as that of the absolute pronouns. In this article it is shown that such a conclusion is completely unfounded and that these forms in fact function as definitizers of oblique object nouns. Attention is given, furthermore, to several important insights into Bantu grammar in general and Zulu grammar in particular, that have emanated from this finding.
