Abstract

The evolution of genres in Southern Sotho is considered in this article, in view of their fecundation from the oral heritage and neighbouring literatures, and with reference to the problematical definition and development of genres in general. Some plays by Sekese, Taoana, Mofokeng, and Masiea were inspired by ditshomo. Some plays by B.M. Khaketla, Malefane, Moiloa, and Taoana constitute a subgenre that cannot be wished away. Mofolo's Chaka finds itself at the crossroads of genre, counterproving C.M. Bowra's doubtful conclusions on the literary abilities of the African mind.
