1. Effects of four herbicides on the infestation of maize by the nematode Pratylenchus zeae

Effects of four herbicides on the infestation of maize by the nematode Pratylenchus zeae

Item type: Journal Article • Journal: South African Journal of Plant and Soil • Authors: ElizabethM. Jordaan --- , Republic of South Africa D. de Waele --- , Republic of South Africa
The effects of atrazine, alachlor, EPTC and 2, 4-D on penetration and reproduction rate of Pratylenchus zeae on maize, were evaluated. The herbicides had no significant influence on the nematode populations.
2. Optimum temperature and inoculation levels for in vitro production of Pratylenchus brachyurus on carrot discs

Optimum temperature and inoculation levels for in vitro production of Pratylenchus brachyurus on carrot discs

Item type: Journal Article • Journal: South African Journal of Plant and Soil • Authors: H. Fourie --- , South Africa G.A. Venter --- , South Africa A.H. Mc Donald --- , South Africa
Pratylenchus brachyurus is an economically important parasite of several agricultural crops, including potato, groundnut, maize and soybean. Large numbers of this species are required for research on pathogenecity, host plant resistance and efficacy of nematicides. The effect of inoculation density...
3. Non-uptake of silicon and variable nematode species relationships between different levels of this element in sugarcane

Non-uptake of silicon and variable nematode species relationships between different levels of this element in sugarcane

Item type: Journal Article • Journal: South African Journal of Plant and Soil • Authors: S.D. Berry --- , South Africa V.W. Spaull --- , South Africa P.V. Ramouthar --- , South Africa P. Cadet --- , France
Silicon (Si) is known to alleviate biotic and abiotic stresses in many crops. Much of the research on the biotic influence of Si has dealt with insects and fungi, with no proper studies on the effect of Si on plant-parasitic...
4. Case study of effect of glyphosate application on plant-parasitic nematodes associated with a soybean–maize rotation system in South Africa

Case study of effect of glyphosate application on plant-parasitic nematodes associated with a soybean–maize rotation system in South Africa

Item type: Journal Article • Journal: South African Journal of Plant and Soil • Authors: Akhona Mbatyoti --- Unit for Environmental Sciences and Management, Integrated Pest Management, South Africa Mieke S Daneel --- Agricultural Research Council–Tropical and Subtropical Crops, South Africa Antoinette Swart --- Agricultural Research Council–Plant Health and Protection, South Africa Mariette Marais --- Agricultural Research Council–Plant Health and Protection, South Africa Dirk De Waele --- Unit for Environmental Sciences and Management, Integrated Pest Management, South Africa Hendrika Fourie --- Unit for Environmental Sciences and Management, Integrated Pest Management, South Africa
Information on the effect of the herbicide glyphosate on nematodes in the field is limited and contradictory. A small field experiment was conducted during two consecutive summer-growing seasons to investigate the response of plant-parasitic nematode communities on the application of...
5. Plant-parasitic nematode assemblages associated with glyphosate tolerant and conventional soybean cultivars in South Africa

Plant-parasitic nematode assemblages associated with glyphosate tolerant and conventional soybean cultivars in South Africa

Item type: Journal Article • Journal: African Zoology • Authors: A Mbatyoti --- Unit for Environmental Sciences and Management, South Africa MS Daneel --- Agricultural Research Council-Tropical and Subtropical Crops, South Africa A Swart --- Agricultural Research Council-Plant Health and Protection, South Africa M Marais --- Agricultural Research Council-Plant Health and Protection, South Africa D De Waele --- Unit for Environmental Sciences and Management, South Africa H Fourie --- Unit for Environmental Sciences and Management, South Africa
Information about the non-target effects of glyphosate, a broad-spectrum systemic herbicide on soil-borne nematodes is scarce and not well documented for South African agricultural fields. In the present study, the abundance and identity of plant-parasitic nematodes in roots and rhizosphere...
