Book Publishing

Types of Books Published

NISC publishes books that are mostly scholarly in nature or have some value to the academic community. These are the types of books that fit well with our manifesto of Publishing Africa's Research. As such, we publish books that seek to contribute to academic literature in the continent. Our current titles include works that are valuable reference guides to researchers and the layperson alike. For a full list of titles currently published by NISC please see our BOOKS page.

Production

Unlike many publishers, NISC maintains an in-house production capacity and has resisted moving editing and typesetting functions offshore. We pride ourselves on our high production values. Authors can engage with a local copy editor that has a relevant post graduate qualification and is able to engage with the content meaningfully. Likewise we employ skilled graphics and layout specialists. Cover design is handled by specialist designers and we make use of both high-quality lithographic printing and state-of-the-art digital print-on-demand technologies, depending on requirements. Where appropriate, eBook options are also available.

Promotion, Sales & Marketing

NISC has a cooperative approach to publishing and as such we collaborate with third parties to ensure your book receives the promotion it deserves. Most of our books are sold through our wholesale agents, Blue Weaver, who ensure that our books are available in bookstores and through online retailers. We can also contract specialist book promoters to assist with the launch of your book. In order to promote a book in different markets we may enter into ad hoc co-publishing collaborations with other publishers who have access to other regions.

Publishing Models

Although NISC has published books via the traditional publishing model, in which we assume the financial risk, offering the author a royalty on any sales, nowadays we offer authors a self-publishing option instead. This means that in most cases we will offer authors a complete publishing service, in exchange for a fee. The author keeps all the revenue generated from book sales. Unlike many self-publishing services, we are selective, and choose books that will fit with our product portfolio and be a credit to the NISC brand. We don't offer unneeded services or promise unobtainable fortunes. What NISC does do is a frank assessment of your work and a guarantee that if it is published with us, the final product will be of high quality.

Manuscript Requirements

If you would like a quote for publishing your book, please send us a complete manuscript (MS Word format) and we will do an assessment on the type of work needed and an approximate cost for print and publishing options.

Publish Your Book with NISC

The editorial experience was excellent: the reviewers were timely and their feedback was generative. The co-editor of the special issue was proactive about communicating information to me. In latter stages, the staff that shepherded the essay through the copy-editing stages was also very helpful and in good contact.
