Abstract

In this paper we survey the theory of some of the structures that have been defined on sets of subsets, and illustrate the way motivation has come from functional analysis; we show how certain results can be generalized in the wider setting of categories and functors, and we give a preliminary announcement of some new results of the author and S.M. Harvey.
