Abstract

Clonal identities in a tree breeding and clonal development programme in Portugal consisted of two letters followed by a number of up to three digits. In Eucalpytus globulus clones the letters encoded pedigree information (and the year of induction into the clonal programme), while in interspecific hybrid clones they signified the parent species. Within the pedigree or hybrid, blocks of clonal numbers conveyed additional information including the family, while the individual numbers within the blocks were unique to each clone. The standard form of the identity minimised the risk of mistranscription and was easy to remember.
