Since 1975, several projects of the National Research Institute for Oceanology in Stellenbosch have been aimed at studying eddies in the south-western Indian Ocean. During this time, attention was specifically focused on the cyclonic deep-sea eddies of the region. The results eventually led to the discovery of the Moçambique Ridge Current, which was considered responsible for the eddies observed in the vicinity of the Moçambique Ridge. In all, nine eddies of this current had been located by 1983. The paper summarizes the main characteristics of these eddies and uses as an example an eddy observed and surveyed in April 1983.
