Abstract

The Zulu novel Iziboshwa zothando can be read as a narrative of the voices of suffering during the apartheid years. The novel privileges events of suffering to afford the once voiceless people a voice, and as such, gives them social and moral recognition. In addition, by giving voice to the victims of apartheid, the novel promotes the post-apartheid spirit of forgiveness and reconciliation captured by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
