A redefinition of Afrixalus fulvovittatus (Cope, 1860) and Afrixalus vittiger (Peters, 1876) (Amphibia, Anura Hyperoliidae)

Abstract

The validity of both Afrixalus fulvovittatus (Cope, 1860) and A. vittiger (Peters, 1876) as separate species is supported. Differences in their morphology, calls and tadpoles are presented, and the distributional ranges of both species are discussed. Morphological and vocal evidence suggests a number of other cryptic multi‐striped Afrixalus species, ranging from Sudan and Ethiopia to Tanzania and southern Democratic Republic of Congo. This material is referred to under the blanket term Afrixalus “quadrivittatus” pending a thorough taxonomic revision.
