The Evolution of the Kiswahili Syllable Structure

Abstract

Kiswahili, the most extensively spoken language in Eastern Africa, has been described as the most dynamic and adaptable Bantu language, both structurally and lexically, in order to meet its expanded communicative roles. One of the major structural changes, which have occurred, is the reinforcement of the earlier syllable structure and the development of flexibility in the system so as to accommodate other consonant and vowel combinations in the onset and rhyme. This evolution has made Kiswahili unique among the Bantu languages.
