Abstract

The first Venda writers were indoctrinated by Christian education literary writing. The Bantu Education Act of 1953 was also intimidating in the choice of themes. Hence they were very selective in the choice of their themes, selecting themes which they thought would be acceptable to the authorities. Most of the themes chosen by the first Venda writers dealt with the clash of cultures, i.e. Venda traditional culture and the Western way of life. This article deals with the influence of missionaries in the depiction of the clash of cultures by the first Venda novelists.
