Abstract

John Hollander discusses different kinds of titles. He refers to titles for short poems, titles which do not indicate what a poem is about, titles which tend to be thematic, titles which are a replica of the first line of a poem, and titles which incorporate the possibility of symbolic reference. Wilsmore in his classification of titles, distinguishes between the title (as well as the different kinds), the subtitle (and its different kinds), and the footnote. These kinds (Mamogobo's title as an example) all appear in the Northern Sotho literature; the practice of Mamogobo in his poem Leduleputswa is however not raised by any critic, as this is a type of title elucidation peculiar to Mamogobo.
