Abstract

A non-standard language variety can only be identified with reference to a corresponding standard language. Although a standard language may be regarded as a superordinate variety representing correct or prestigious usage, standard languages can differ in many respects, it is moreover difficult to define individual standard languages satisfactorily. Some typical features of standard languages are discussed. It is then argued that it would be better to characterize standard languages in terms of profiles based on linguistic and sociolinguistic parameters, rather than trying to define them. The article is concluded with a suggested profile for standard Northern Sotho.
