Abstract

In this article the possible status and function of Zulu in the new South Africa is speculated on. The discussion is based on the language ideology framework as propounded by Juan Cobarrubias and modified by T.G. Reagan. Four ideological orientations are considered, namely: internationalization, linguistic assimilation, pluralism and vernacularization. In conclusion, it is felt that the status and function of Zulu will be determined mainly within the concept of linguistic pluralism and vernacularization. Motivation is given for the elimination of the other two possibilities.
