Abstract

The play Insumansumane by Elliot Zondi is situated within the African-language literary system; it is described and related to other types of texts, in order to show how the dramatist has used historical material, i.e. the Bambada rebellion, to suggest that rebellion seems to be the only option left to deal with a hegemonic situation (of a particular kind). However, the assertion of a nationalism is the dramatist's ultimate goal. History is presented in a particular way to achieve all this.
