Abstract

In this article an attempt is made towards an interpretation of the concepts ‘proto’ and ‘transitional’ forms which were distinguished by J.M. Lenake (1984). Certain existing viewpoints regarding the impact of traditional poetic elements on modern Sotho poetry are presented. Attempts for a classification of Sotho poetry are dealt with. Finally an analysis of a modern elegy by E.A.S. Lesoro is made in which the functions of certain traditional poetic elements are highlighted. Lesoro's poem is classified and references are also made to some other modern Sotho elegies.
