Abstract

In this article I endeavour to give a brief overview of the history of African languages in Transvaal schools since their incorporation into the high school curriculum in 1941, with special reference to Northern Sotho. Some of the current problems facing the teaching and learning of African languages are discussed. It is argued that many of the current problems facing the teaching and learning of African languages may be attributed to the fact that the subject didactics of these languages have been neglected in the past. A chronological bibliography of publications pertaining to the teaching and learning of African languages is included.
