A HISTORICAL OVERVIEW AND CRITICAL EVALUATION OF PUBLISHED SESOTHO DRAMAS

Abstract

Students of African languages are often required to write tasks on the published genres of the African language which they have chosen as their field of study but for various reasons might not have read the texts themselves. Other interested persons and researchers who wish to know more about the existing works of a specific African language are often unable to read the language concerned themselves. This article is a modest contribution attempting to alleviate this problem partially in respect of Sesotho (Southern Sotho) drama. It is not merely a historical survey of published Sesotho dramas but also includes comments and criticisms by both Black critics and others on drama. Since so many dramas are surveyed historically, space unfortunately does not permit an in-depth critical analysis of every drama discussed.
