Abstract

A better understanding of the manner in which Matsepe portrays his characters, depends on a number of factors. First one must take into account the historical and traditional backgrounds of the novels. This will enable one to have a clear picture of the world in which his characters operate. Secondly it will be fruitful for one to consider how effectively Matsepe uses name-giving to bring out subtle shades of his characters' traits. One of the most important devices that Matsepe uses in character portrayal is metaphor. This device is evenly used as a vehicle of character delineation in almost all his works. Finally, one has to take cognisance of Matsepe's use of the narrating character. In all his works this figure plays a central role. Thus any indepth study of Matsepe's character delineation must include the narrating character.
