Abstract

Until recently the Mantoux or tuberculin skin test has been the standard diagnostic test for latent tuberculosis (TB) infection. However, two new commercial blood assays have recently become available in South Africa for the diagnosis of latent TB infection, the T-spot TB test and the Quantiferon-TB Gold In-Tube. These assays are based on detection of gamma interferon produced by T cells in response to antigens specific for Mycobacterium tuberculosis. We aimed to review and computer these respective tests in our setting.
