Information Technology has a pervasive influence in business, from supporting the operations of the organization, to making a significant contribution to the competitive strategy of the enterprise. Identifying new opportunities for IT support is a major aspect of planning for the use of the technology. This article analyzes a number of existing methodologies in terms of their analytical direction and highlights a number of shortfalls in each, it then suggests a framework for categorizing identification procedures and proposes a model for selecting an approach that is appropriate to an organization.
