Gold Open Access Procedure

Open Access Options

Publishing an Open Access article in a NISC subscription-based journal

NISC (Pty) Ltd publishes scholarly journals that are subscription-based, with paid access to the content as well as Open Access journals where content is available free. However, we also offer authors the option to publish an article Open Access in our subscription-based journals. Authors are charged a once off Article Processing Charge (APC) for this service.

This works as follows:

  1. Any paper accepted to be published in a NISC subscription-based journal can be published as an Open Access article.
  2. The author only commits to make their article Open Access once the paper has completed the relevant peer review process, has been laid out and is ready to be signed off by the author.
  3. The author will be required to pay a once off Article Processing Charge (APC) in order to publish his/her paper Open Access. The APC in 2024 is:

Africa: ZAR 20 500 (excluding VAT for South Africa)
Rest of the World: Authors from outside of Africa wishing to publish Open Access on our Taylor & Francis (T&F) co-published titles will need to arrange Open Access publishing via T&Fs Open Select program. For further queries or clarification please contact us.

The discounted APC excludes any additional categories of page charges that may be levied. For instance, some journals have a fee for printing of colour pages in the article, while in a few other cases, there is small general page charges to offset production costs. See the relevant journal’s ‘Instructions for Authors’ to confirm if there are colour printing charges and general page charges, and the applicable waiver policy.

  1. The author retains copyright for the published work but allows the article to be published and distributed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0). Other Creative Commons Licenses may be available on request.
  2. Once published, authors may disseminate such Open Access articles in whatever way they wish, within the terms of the Creative Commons License. Furthermore, the specific article will be clearly identified as available for free download on any sites where the full text of the journal is hosted by NISC.

If you have any further queries or would like to publish your paper Open Access please email journals@nisc.co.za.

A very supportive, personal and committed editorial team, which takes quality of the work very seriously. I learned a lot through the experience of publishing with Anthropology Southern Africa, and felt supported throughout the process.
