Abstract

This study investigated role influences on high school learners' preparation for tertiary education as perceived by the educators. Participants were 51 educators teaching Grade 12 classes from randomly sampled high schools in an urban school district in the Free State Province, South Africa. An interview schedule in line with the research question was used in focus group discussions with participants. The qualitative data were thematically analysed for recurring themes. The findings suggest that, amongst others, educators perceive subject selection, career pathing, personal and social issues as challenges in their task of preparing learners to cope with the transition from high school to university.
