Production Capacity of Softwood Sawmills in the Republic of South Africa, Swaziland and Transkei

The technical and practical capacities of softwood sawmills and boxmills in the Republics of South Africa, Transkei and Ciskei and the Kingdom of Swaziland were estimated as at 30 June 1987. These estimates show that sawmills in Southern Africa are technically capable of an annual sawlog input of 4,9 million m3, while boxmills have a technical capacity of 601 000 m3 per annum. Practical production capacity of softwood sawmills for 1987 is estimated to be 4 million m3 sawlog intake per annum, while softwood boxmill sawlog intake per annum is estimated to be 447 000 m3.
