Multiple Resource Utilisation Developments in Mondi Forests

Abstract

Defined as the use of available resources other than the planted trees on Mondi's landholdings, the development of various MRU projects is described from 1975 onwards. Projects are differentiated into those that are directly dependant on the presence of planted trees, such as Boletus mushrooms and honey production, and those that are not, such as aquaculture, ecotourism, livestock grazing, recreational hunting and angling, and the recreational use of available accommodation. The theme of “use it or lose it” is emphasised, as is the potential of MRU projects to contribute to RDP.
