Abstract

An analysis is presented of 1 596 fire reports submitted voluntarily during the period 01.04.1979 to 31.03.1985 in respect of 201 private plantations situated in the Transvaal (132 plantations) and Natal (67 plantations). Of these plantations 155 were insured and 46 uninsured. The analysis includes data on the cause of fires, the month, day of the week and time of day when fires occurred and details regarding the size of areas burnt, damage caused by fires, the time taken and method employed to extinguish fires, the widths of belts used, the efficiency of the staff manning the look-out towers and of radio equipment used to report the occurrence of fires. Various general recommendations are made to assist the private forest industry.
