Abstract

A land-use study in the Riviersonderend Mountain Catchment Area was undertaken to determine the effect of grazing on the fynbos vegetation. Alternative grazing systems were also investigated. It was clear that burning of the veld combined with grazing shortly thereafter led to a decrease in species diversity. New farming methods whereby less wheat is planted annually and wheat is rotated with a lucerne and clover mix have given farmers the opportunity to withdraw their stock from the mountains and to obtain higher productivity by means of planted grazing.
