Fish & Fisheries Worldwide (FFW) is an electronic information resource which is an aggregation of 12 bibliographic databases from around the world. Databases include FISHLIT, Aquatic Biology Citations (ABC) and the Fishing Industry Research Index (FIRI) from South Africa, Fisheries Review, a fish subset from Medline and Castell’s Nutrition index.  The database from the Worldfish Center’s Library (previously ICLARM) was recently added in 2007.  FFW includes deep links from the taxonomic field to FishBase which offers full-text species profiles and fish illustrations for 29 000 fish species.

FFW offers comprehensive information for researchers specialising in ichthyology, fisheries, aquaculture and related facets of aquatic biology. Dating back to 1971, this database has over 800 000 records and prominent themes covered include culture and propagation of fish and all aquaculture species, genetics and behaviour, fish taxonomy, natural history, ecology, parasites, diseases, habitat management, fish and invertebrate processing or marketing and general fisheries and marine mammal research and management. The Aquatic Biology Citations (ABC) database, which includes bibliographies on fish, mammals, birds, plants and invertebrates, was added in 2008.

The records and abstracts are derived from journal articles, research reports, conference proceedings, grey literature, books, monographs, theses and dissertations and citations.
Users of Fish & Fisheries Worldwide include universities, fisheries and environmental research institutes, national game parks and government departments including departments of agriculture. FFW is indispensable for those institutions involved in fisheries regulations, management and policy.

FFW includes abstracts and direct links to full text, author contact information, links to publisher’s websites and information on holding libraries.

Databases on Fish and Fisheries Worldwide now included in (FFAB)- Available on EBSCOhost include:

FISHLIT

(1980- current)
Compiled by NISC SA in association with the South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity Library, Rhodes University Library and Marine and Coastal Management Library, FISHLIT covers all aspects of fish, shellfish, fisheries and aquaculture literature. Indexed by an experienced team of aquatic biologists, its emphasis is on quality, but with 310 000 records and 30 000 new records being added annually it provides quantity too.

The FISHLIT database also provides unique historical coverage back to the 1800's. Abstracts, formerly missing from FISHLIT, are now included in new records and rapidly being added to the old records. Over 5 000 sources including academic journals, popular publications, books, monographs, conference and workshop proceedings, gey literature, theses and dissertations provide many unique records not available on other commercial databases. The inclusion of holding library details, where possible, enhances full-text retrieval possibilities.

Fisheries Review

(1971 - current)
This database, with 110 00 records, has been compiled since 1996 by NISC SA under the auspices of FISHLIT. Previously (until 1995) the US National Biological Service compiled  this database. Its coverage of fish and fisheries is excellent. Thorough taxonomic and geographic identifiers are especially helpful.  Backdating from 'Sport Fisheries Abstracts' is underway.

Fish and Wildlife Reference Service

(1960 - current)
This extremely important and useful database is compiled by the Fish and Wildlife Reference Service. Ninety percent of this file is drawn from unpublished research reports, field studies and surveys from US state agencies. Content emphasises fish management, streams, wetlands and endangered species. Document delivery is available. There are over 21 650 records in all.

Aquaculture

(1970 - 84)
Over 10 000 abstracts from the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, provides valuable information on all aspects of marine, freshwater and brackishwater organisms.

Castell's Nutrition References

(1970 - current)
This respected resource from John Castell (Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada) covers five major areas: fish nutrition, crustacean nutrition, mollusc nutrition, fish culture and fish oils in human health. It includes over 20 800 references.

Composite records:

Duplication among files is resolved by special, software-created composite records that contain the information shared by two or more source records, plus any data that is unique to a record. These "super records" provide all the relevant information, but without the inconvenience of duplicate citations.

Fish Subset of Medline

(1966-present)
Medline, the world's premier health database, is produced by the National Library of Medicine in Bethesda, USA. Coverage in this 53 400 record subset of medical literature includes: veterinary science, fish diseases and their detection and control, human nutrition as it relates to fish and shellfish in the diet, including fish oils, allergies to fish and shellfish, and poisonous fish.

Fishing Industry Research Institute (FIRI) Database

(1980 to current)
FIRI is compiled by NISC SA in association with CSIR-Bio/Chemtek. This database, with over 40 000 records covers all aspects of the aquaculture and fishing industries, specialising in fish and shellfish processing and quality control of fish products.

FishBase Links

Compiled by the International Center for Living Aquatic Resources Management (ICLARM) FishBase provides detailed physiological, ecological and taxonomic information for more than 25 000 fish species. As an enhancement to NISC's fisheries related products on BiblioLine, including FFW, direct links between species names in our bibliographic records and the appropriate FishBase species pages are being developed. Links to NISC from FishBase will inititate a specific literature search.
